There is zero independent research to support the theory that chemical imbalances in the brain cause depression and anxiety.
Here’s a good start for references on how the chemical imbalance theory is just that - a theory. In fact, there’s very little evidence supporting chemical imbalances. And, to the person who said they owed their life to anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication, I would highly encourage you to look at what really helped. Were there certain behaviors or thoughts you changed? Are you sure it wasn’t simply a placebo effect - that once you thought you were getting help you cured yourself? Here’s an article about a suicidal young man who was given ketamine and was “cured” of his depression within days. In this article they say that connections in our brain can become weak, and when they don’t reconnect it can lead to negative thoughts, actions, and behaviors that lead to depression and anxiety. Ketamine and other drugs, including shrooms, LSD/acid, and MDMA/ecstasy are all capable of building new neural pathways and restoring old ones - helping people feel happier, more at peace, and for those suffering from depression and anxiety, a “cure.”
